What's the difference between an SEO company and a digital marketing agency?
The difference is scope: an SEO company works on one channel, unpaid search results, and can go deep into it. A digital marketing agency runs several channels, such as paid search and social ads, email, social content, and sometimes design and development, with SEO as one part of a wider plan. Neither is better in general; the right choice depends on whether your problem is search visibility in particular or a marketing program that needs several channels built and run together.
What each one is built for
An SEO company’s work centers on how the site is crawled and indexed, which searches it should answer, the content and structure that answer them, and the links and mentions that support them. Because that is all it does, its team can specialize within search, for example in technical work, local search, or large online stores.
A digital marketing agency’s advantage is coordination. One team can plan the channels together, keep messages consistent between ads, email, and the website, and give you one relationship to manage. Its SEO capability varies: some agencies have strong search teams, others treat SEO as a small line item next to paid media. If organic search matters to you, ask how the agency staffs it, rather than assuming it is a strength.
Paid and organic are separate results
When one agency runs both your ads and your SEO, keep the two results apart. Google’s page Do you need an SEO? states: “Advertising with Google won’t have any effect on your site’s presence in our search results.” Spending more on ads does not improve organic rankings, and ad traffic is not evidence of SEO progress. Google Analytics keeps them in different channels; its default channel groups define Paid Search as the channel by which users arrive “via ads on search-engine sites like Bing, Baidu, or Google.” A report that blends the two, or presents total search traffic as the result of SEO, hides which part of the work is producing what.
When each fits
A digital marketing agency fits when you have no marketing system yet and need several channels started together, or when paid channels and quick results matter as much as long-term organic growth. An SEO company fits when your other marketing works but organic search has stalled, or when search visibility is the specific problem to solve, such as a technical issue holding back indexing, or content that does not match what customers search for.
Using both
Some businesses use an agency or an in-house team for the broad program and an SEO company for depth in organic search. That arrangement brings its own cost: you become responsible for keeping the providers aligned, passing information between them, and deciding when their recommendations conflict. Write down who owns what, such as page content, landing pages for ads, tracking, and reporting, so that two teams do not change the same page for different reasons.
Deciding
Start from the problem rather than the label. Ask either kind of provider which services it delivers with its own staff, which it subcontracts, how it staffs SEO, and how it reports paid and organic results. The answers tell you more than whether the company calls itself an SEO company or a digital marketing agency.
