When will an SEO company optimize my local listings?
Early in the engagement, because the work does not depend on changes to your website, content, or links, and errors in a listing can be fixed directly. The exact timing, though, is set partly by Google’s own steps. A Google Business Profile has to be verified before it can be edited and before a company can be added to manage it, and verification follows a method Google chooses, with waits Google sets. A company that knows those steps will plan the optimization around them rather than promise a fixed start date.
Why listing work comes first
Correcting your business details, choosing accurate categories, filling in services, hours, and service areas, and removing duplicate entries can all happen alongside slower work on the site. A wrong phone number or a missing category is a repair, and there is no reason to leave it until later phases.
Verification sets the order
Google’s page on verifying your business explains that the method is not yours to pick: “Verification methods are automatically determined by Google and can’t be changed.” Depending on the business, it may be a video recording, a phone call or text, or a postcard, among others, and sometimes more than one.
If the method is a postcard, the timing is Google’s. Its page says: “Most codes arrive within 14 days.” It adds: “Verification codes expire after 30 days.” While the code is on its way, Google warns: “Do not edit your business name, address, or category on your Business Profile. If you do, the code we sent you won’t work.” The optimization of those three fields therefore waits until verification is complete. After the steps are done, Google adds a review: “To help maintain the integrity of your Business Profile, verification reviews take up to 5 business days.”
The same page settles when the company comes in: “If a third party helps you manage your profile, you can add them to your profile after verification.” It also states: “Do not share the verification code with anyone, even with those who manage your Business Profile.” So you, as the owner, complete verification and enter the code yourself, and then add the company as a manager.
Edits are reviewed before they appear
Once the profile is verified, the company can work through the details. Google’s page on editing your Business Profile notes: “We review your changes before we update them live on your profile.” Changes to core details may not show immediately, so the plan should allow for checking that each change has gone live before moving on to the next dependent change.
Other listings
Beyond Google, the company checks the other places your business appears, such as directories, map services, and industry sites, so that the name, address, and phone number match everywhere. Each platform has its own claiming and editing process, and some respond faster than others, so this part runs over a longer period and depends on how many old or inaccurate entries exist.
After the setup
Listing work continues for as long as the engagement does: hours and details change, new photos and updates are added, reviews need replies, and duplicates or edits from other sources can appear. Ask how often the company will check your listings and how it will tell you about changes it did not make.
Tracking verification and listing changes
Ask the company which verification method your profile is showing, who will complete it, and what it will do while verification is pending. Ask for a list of the other listings it plans to claim or correct, and for a dated record of each change so you can see what was done and when it went live.
