Can an SEO company help with local search optimization?
Yes. Local search has its own results, the map listings and the group of businesses shown with a map for searches with local intent, and its own rules, which Google publishes in plain terms. Google’s guide to improving your local ranking says that “local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity”, and that “there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.” An SEO company can work on the parts of that you can influence. Distance is not one of them: it is how far the business is from the person searching.
Your Business Profile
The profile is where local work starts, and Google’s advice is specific. Verify the business, which “tells Google that you’re authorized to represent the business, so it’s more likely to show up in search results.” Keep information complete and accurate, because “businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results”, while inaccurate information means the profile “might not show up for relevant searches in your area.” That covers the address or service area, hours including special hours, categories, and attributes such as parking.
Google also lists replying to reviews and adding photos and videos among the steps that help. An SEO company can handle all of this through a manager role on your profile while you remain the owner.
The website behind the profile
Google describes relevance as “how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for”, and your website supports that match. A company will research the searches people make for your services in your area and make sure the site answers them: a clear page for each service, and, for a business serving several areas, pages for those areas that say something specific about each one rather than repeating the same text with a different town name.
Reviews and mentions elsewhere
The same guide describes the third factor under the heading of prominence, how well known a business is, “based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have”, and that “more reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking.” Two kinds of work follow from that. One is a steady, honest process for asking customers for reviews and replying to them, within Google’s rules for content on Maps, which prohibit offering incentives for reviews and selectively asking for positive ones. The other is earning mentions and links from local sources, such as community organizations, local media, and regional industry groups, and keeping your business name, address, and phone number consistent wherever the business is listed, so the listings clearly describe one business.
How the work is packaged
Local SEO is offered on its own or as part of a wider engagement. A smaller package may cover the profile and listing cleanup for one location; a larger one adds location pages, local link outreach, and tracking of calls and direction requests. A business with several locations needs each location handled separately, since each has its own profile.
Who does not need it
Local optimization matters when customers look for a nearby business or one that serves their area. A business that sells online to customers anywhere, with no local presence that matters to buyers, gains little from it and is better served by work on its national search visibility. Ask the company which of your customers search locally before agreeing to a local package.
