A Should question

Should I hire an SEO company for a local business?

It can be worth it, but only after two things: you know how much of your business comes from people searching nearby, and you have done the basics yourself. Local visibility starts with a Business Profile that is verified, accurate, reviewed, and kept up to date, and an owner can do that without paying anyone. Hiring makes sense when local competition is strong, when you have several locations, when visibility has stalled despite the basics, or when you cannot give the work steady time.

Measure your local demand first

Before deciding, look at your own numbers. Your Business Profile’s performance report shows how many people called, asked for directions, or clicked through to your website from your profile, and the searches that brought them. Search Console shows how many searches that include your town, area, or “near me” brought visitors to your site. If those figures are small next to referrals and repeat customers, local SEO is a smaller lever for you; if they are a large part of how new customers arrive, it deserves investment.

Do the basics yourself

Google’s own tips to improve your local ranking describe steps any owner can take: verify the business, keep its information complete and accurate, keep hours current, respond to reviews, and add photos and, for eligible retailers, in-store products. The same page notes that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Add to that a page on your website for each service and each area you serve, and the same name, address, and phone number everywhere your business is listed. Doing this first means you will not pay a company to set up what you could have set up yourself, and you will understand what a company proposes to do beyond it.

When hiring pays off

A company earns its fee when the work goes beyond the basics or beyond your time. That includes markets where several competitors have strong profiles and many reviews, businesses with more than one location that need profiles, pages, and listings kept consistent, sites with technical problems or a website that needs rebuilding, and situations where calls and directions from search have flattened or fallen even though the basics are in place. It also includes owners who simply cannot give the work regular attention.

Judging a local SEO proposal

The company should start from your Business Profile and your own data, not from a generic package. It should be able to say what it will do that you cannot easily do yourself, how it will report results in calls, direction requests, and inquiries rather than only rankings, and how it will handle reviews within the platforms’ rules. And it should leave you as the owner of your Business Profile, with the company added as a manager rather than holding the profile itself.
