A How question

How does an SEO company track rankings?

With two kinds of measurement that answer different questions. A rank tracking tool checks a fixed list of searches under the same controlled conditions each time, so changes from one check to the next mean something. Search Console reports the positions your pages actually held in real searches by real people, averaged across all of them. The company sets the tracking up to match where and how your customers search, reads the two sources together, and judges progress by groups of related searches rather than single positions.

Why there is no single ranking to find

Google tailors results to the person searching. Its explanation of how results are ranked says it uses “information such as your location, past Search history, and Search settings to determine what is most relevant for you in the moment”, and that “Our systems can recognize if you have visited the same page multiple times before and bring that page to the top of your Search results.” That second sentence explains a confusion owners can run into: someone who searches for their own services, and has visited their own site many times, may see it higher than a new customer would. A position checked on your own phone is not a measurement.

How tracking tools sample

A rank tracking tool runs the agreed searches automatically, from a set location, on a set device type, without a personal history, and records where your pages appear and which result features are on the page, such as a local map pack, a featured snippet, or an AI-generated summary that pushes standard results down. The value lies in repeating the same check the same way, so that a movement reflects a change in the results rather than a change in how they were checked.

Setting it up to match your customers

The searches tracked should be the ones your customers use, and the conditions should be theirs. A business serving particular towns is tracked from those towns, and mobile and desktop are tracked separately, because results can differ between them. A national business can be tracked from several markets to see whether visibility holds across them. The list of tracked searches should be agreed with you and reviewed as your services change.

What Search Console adds

Search Console records positions from real searches, together with impressions and clicks, including searches nobody thought to track. Its average position blends every appearance into one figure, so a page can show an average of 8 because it ranked 4th for some searches and 14th for others. That makes it a guide to trends rather than a snapshot, and a useful check on the tracking tool: if the tool shows steady positions while Search Console shows falling impressions, something the tool does not measure has changed.

Reading groups, not single positions

The company organizes tracked searches into groups, such as a service line or a location, and watches how each group moves. A group in which most searches are rising is a better sign than any single keyword’s position, and a single keyword slipping a place or two inside a rising group is not a reason for concern. Read alongside impressions and clicks, the grouped view shows whether the work is gaining visibility where it matters.
